Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are a major public health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, around 29 million people had AUD in 2022. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing the severe consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.

One of the most effective tools for identifying hazardous drinking behaviors is the AUDIT-C. In this article, we will explore what AUDIT-C is, why it’s important, how it works, and how you can use it to assess alcohol consumption patterns.

What is AUDIT-C?

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test – Consumption (AUDIT-C) is a brief, three-question screening tool designed to identify individuals who engage in hazardous drinking or who may have alcohol use disorders. This includes people suffering from alcohol abuse and dependence. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the AUDIT-C is a streamlined version of the longer AUDIT questionnaire, focusing specifically on alcohol consumption patterns.

AUDIT-C Questions

1. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol in the past year?

  • Never (0 points)
  • Monthly or less (1 point)
  • 2-4 times a month (2 points)
  • 2-3 times a week (3 points)
  • 4 or more times a week (4 points)

2. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?

  • 1 or 2 (0 points)
  • 3 or 4 (1 point)
  • 5 or 6 (2 points)
  • 7 to 9 (3 points)
  • 10 or more (4 points)

3. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?

  • Never (0 points)
  • Less than monthly (1 point)
  • Monthly (2 points)
  • Weekly (3 points)
  • Daily or almost daily (4 points)

AUDIT-C Scoring System

The AUDIT-C scoring system is straightforward scored on a scale of 0 to 12. Each response assigned a point value from 0 to 4. The total score is calculated by summing the points from all three questions. The thresholds for identifying hazardous drinking are different for men and women. The AUDIT-C score interpretation is as follows:

  • Men: A score of 4 or more is considered positive, optimal for identifying hazardous drinking or active alcohol use disorders.
  • Women: A score of 3 or more is considered positive.

How To Interpret AUDIT-C Scores?

A higher score on the AUDIT-C indicates a greater likelihood of hazardous drinking or an alcohol use disorder. For men, a score of 4 or more suggests that further assessment or intervention may be necessary. For women, a score of 3 or more warrants additional evaluation.

If a person scores above the threshold, they can be considered a hazardous drinker.  Generally, the higher the score, the more it is important to seek a further assessment from a healthcare professional. This could involve a more comprehensive evaluation using the full AUDIT questionnaire or other diagnostic tools.

Importance of Alcohol Screening

Alcohol use disorders are prevalent globally, with significant impacts on individuals and society. According to the World Health Organization, harmful use of alcohol results in 3 million deaths each year, representing 5.1% of all deaths worldwide. These statistics highlight the importance of early detection and intervention to mitigate the harmful effects of excessive alcohol use.

Early identification of hazardous drinking behaviors can prevent the progression to more severe alcohol use disorders. Screening tools like the AUDIT-C enable healthcare providers to detect problematic drinking patterns early, allowing for timely intervention and support.

Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to numerous health problems, such as:

  • Liver disease, leading to liver damage or cirrhosis
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Mental health disorders
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Increased risk of accidents and injuries

By using AUDIT-C to identify risky drinking behaviors, individuals can seek help before serious health consequences arise. If you are concerned about your drinking habits or know someone who might be, consider taking the AUDIT-C questionnaire.
